A shooting involving a state constable happened during a traffic stop Saturday night.
According to Lt. Mike Brandt with the Florence Police Department, the incident happened at around 11:00 p.m. Saturday on Waverly Avenue near Sunset Drive.
In a press conference held Sunday, City of Florence, Mayor Stephen Wukela said the state constable shot the driver of the vehicle. The driver was taken to the hospital for additional treatment.
The constable was on the traffic stop with a Florence Police Officer. No city officers fired their gun, and no city officers are under investigation.
Due to the nature of the incident, Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler asked the State Law Enforcement Divison to take over.
The Class I constable has worked periodically with the Florence Police Department for the past four years, according to the city’s news release.
“As the Mayor of the City of Florence, I want to assure the public that I am satisfied that the City of Florence police officers performed their jobs properly and I am confident that SLED will investigate fully and fairly,” Wukela said in the news release.
SLED continues to investigate the incident.
