Darlington County First Steps is partnering with the County Recreation Department to bring awareness to the community on the importance of contraceptive care.
The non-profit organization says over half of the pregnancies are unintended and there’s also a significant financial cost to the state.
“We want to provide condoms in discrete locations, such as, bathrooms, maybe offices. That way people will have an available resource if they need it,” says the communication specialist, Patricia Sullivan.
Darlington County First step wants to focus on educating kids and make the community a stronger environment.
“The reality is people are doing things and they need protection. We want to make sure we provide that to them easily,” says Sullivan.
The organization says South Carolina ranks 22nd in the U.S. for teen pregnancy.
“A lot of people hear the word condoms and they don’t want to talk about it. We have to face reality, people are doing things,” says Patricia.
Darlington County First Steps and the County Recreation Department will meet to talk about the new effort in the coming weeks.
