Residents got a first look at their homes on Wednesday after the rain from Hurricane Florence flooded the town of Nichols for days.
Homeowners were allowed back in town with their personal vehicles from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“It’s been kinda hard on us,” said resident Elaine Davis.
Davis and her sister, Vonnie Waters, have lived in Nichols for more than 20 years. On Wednesday, they walked into their homes for the first time in two weeks and they are grateful their homes survived.
“I lost everything in my refrigerator, and lost everything in my freezer,” said Davis.
The sisters live down the street from each other and had just recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew back in 2016.
“I don’t know how long I can stay here because of the conditions of the floors, ceilings, and the leaks,” said Davis.
Waters and Davis started cleaning up their homes on Wednesday morning, hoping to get a lot done before the 5 p.m curfew. They said this is only the beginning of a long journey for them.
“There’s no place like home. I’m just ready to get back and try to get things back in order,” said Davis.
The family wants this town to go back to normal, and hopes this doesn’t happen again.
“Nichols, South Carolina needs help,” said Waters.
The family is waiting to get confirmation on when they’ll be allowed back home.
