News13 is asking questions after the sudden removal of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
The page was removed within the past few days. A Google search of the page leads to a Facebook error message that says, “Sorry, this content isn’t available right now”.
Many law enforcement agencies nationwide, including the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, have used social media as a tool to help spread the word about wanted criminals, notable arrests, scams impacting residents, etc.
Facebook has of course become a very powerful tool since its launch in 2004. The social media giant had about 2.8 billion monthly active users around the world, as of September 30, 2018.
In 2017, Facebook introduced a way for users to report ‘fake news’.
As the term ‘fake news’ has appeared more in recent years, law enforcement agencies have taken notice, using their social media pages to provide information directly to the people living in their communities.
On Friday morning, News13 reached out to Major Michael Nunn and Sheriff Kenney Boone from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office about the removal of the page. We have yet to hear back.
