LAKE CITY AREA, SC (WBTW) – Nearly 40 firefighters responded to a house fire in the Lake City area on Tuesday.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the South Lynches Fire Department received a call about a 2-story house fire along Johnsonville Highway, about five miles east of Lake City, according to Sam Brockington, Florence County Fire Rescue Coordinator. The department responded multiple units and received mutual aid from the Johnsonville Fire Department.

Brockington said Chief Robbie Steele, with the SLFD, arrived and called for a second alarm, and the following agencies responded: Hannah Salem Fire Department, Olanta Fire Department, and Howe Springs Fire Department.

A total of about 40 firefighters responded and it took about an hour to bring the fire under control, according to Brockington. The owner was able to escape with his dog.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews are still on scene checking for hotspots.

The fire reportedly started in the rear of the home and spread quickly due to wind this afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
