FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – More than 500 Francis Marion students moved into their residence halls on Saturday.
The even began at eight o’clock and lasted until two in the afternoon.
Francis Marion University is now in its forty-eighth year, and has had a freshman move-in event for about 20 years.
“We’ve got more than 800 new students both freshman and transfers,” said Vice President of Communications, Tucker Mitchell. “It’s always a big event. Very, very exciting event for the new students.”
Mitchell said there are typically more than 300 volunteers that help with move-in day.
“It’s a good chance to kind of get acquainted with a few new people as well,” said Mitchell.
Senior at the university, Joshua Chandler, helped freshman move into their rooms.
“It’s a small campus so we just try to give back to the people that are coming in,” said Chandler. “We try to make it an easier process for them to get through. We try to talk with some people, and interest them in some of the activities that we’ve got going on.”
Freshman at Francis Marion University, Cameron Crisp, said he’s excited about the start of a new chapter in his life.
“I’ve been mostly excited just to like kind of get out of the house and start my own life,” Crisp told News13. “And try to work towards something better for myself in the future.”
Mitchell said the university tries to make move-in an easy process because this time of year can be overwhelming for students.
“I think it’s just something new, and I’m sure there’s a little bit of nervousness, a little bit of trepidation on the part of some students as well, but surely, you’re starting a new part of your life,” Mitchell said. “It’s a new chapter so that’s a very exciting thing.”
FMU classes will begin on Tuesday Aug. 28.
