MARION, SC (WBTW) – Marion County is adopting a plan that could make its properties safer and cut energy costs.

Marion County Council unanimously approved a lighting rehabilitation project Thursday night. That means all lighting on county properties will use LED lights.

County council got to see some sample light fixtures at Thursday’s meeting from Greenbulb Lighting, which is the contractor from Columbia. The company did a similar project for the City of Darlington.

Greenbulb Lighting says Marion County could save about $83,000 a year on energy bills.

“The costs of our products have gone down, the cost of electricity has gone up, and people are more conscious about going green, staying green, doing the right thing, as we like to say,” said Michael McClain, a consultant for Greenbulb Lighting.

Some county council members say LED lighting will make outside areas safer.

Greenbulb lighting says the project should be finished by June.
