A building in Mullins will be converted into housing for disaster recovery volunteers.

Ricky Hardee, the Executive Director of Marion County Habitat for Humanity, says the existing 3,000 square-foot building next to the Dry Dock Seafood Restaurant on Highway 76 will be converted into housing for volunteers who come to the county to assist in recovery efforts after natural disasters.

The building will have bunk beds to accommodate 38 people, two additional bedrooms for couples, a commercial kitchen, a dining area, and four bathrooms.

Work to convert the building will begin the week of July 9 with a group of volunteers from Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

“This project will also greatly aid Marion County in being proactive when the next disaster strikes Marion County instead of being reactive to the disaster. When not in use for disaster recovery groups, the facility will be available for use by the county as a warming shelter in the winter or a cooling shelter in the summer,” says Hardee.

The building will also be available for use as an emergency shelter by the American Red Cross.
