The Leatherman Senior Center participated in the annual ‘March for Wheels’ to help the senior community in the Pee Dee.
“For the community to come out and do this, it’s great,” said volunteer, Marlene Ward.
Dozens of volunteers delivered meals in efforts to help seniors struggling with hunger.
“It’s true to my heart because I work in a nursing home, I have for the last 20 years. Plus one day I’m going to be there, so I hope for the same. If I was ever in need that there’s someone there for me,” said Ward.
The program provides free meals to disabled and home-bound seniors who aren’t able to do groceries or prepare meals for themselves.
“I love reaching out and helping those that don’t even know we’re here. I like going out, and being the voice for these seniors that home-bound and raising awareness for the senior hunger problem in Florence County,” said marketing coordinator, Jesseca Horton.
Throughout the month of March, organizers with the program are encouraging people to help out by becoming a volunteer.
Organizers said there’s still over 300 seniors on the waiting list for Meals on Wheels. “We have more on the waiting list that we have being served. Any attempt that we can try to alleviate that gap, it’s worth a shot. So we just put on these little fundraisers to kinda help bridge the gap,” said Horton.
