Local man partnering up with the Latta Police Department to help community

Marcus McGirt started this organization back in 2016 called Save Our Youth.

This organization encourages kids to stay out of trouble and stay on the right track for school.

“You have someone in the community that’s working for you, but you also have law enforcement backing them up and trying to promote positivity in the community,” said McGirt.

The third annual Back 2 School Expo took place Saturday morning at the Latta gym, where hundreds of children enjoyed outdoor activities, prizes, and food.

“The vendors inside also have backpacks for the kids. If you go to each table they will give you a backpack full of supplies as well,” said Marcus.

Marcus was able to set up nearly 80 backpacks for children just in time for this school year.

The Latta police department partnered up with the organization last year.

They will be donating supplies to children who weren’t able to get a backpack over the weekend.

“I’ve been here for 14 years and I’ve seen Marcus grow. He’s a true inspiration to the children around here,” said Chief of police for Latta, Derrick Cartwright.

The founder plans to continue this tradition for the next couple of years.
