LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – Lake City Police say they’re seeing a decrease in crime in comparison to this time last year.
Chief Kipp Coker established new leadership at the Lake City Police Department last February. Coker is proud to say crime rates are down citywide.
“We’re making process in the city,” said Coker. “What I like is the community calling me. Telling me where the problems are.”
Coker says more officers are out on patrols to increase visibility and possibly stop crimes.
“The visibility is a deterrent. Criminals are not going to break into your house if they see a police officer in your neighborhood,” said Coker.
Coker reports a decrease of more than 50% in assault, vandalism and larceny cases.

He says community policing is key, where people are assisting the police more before and after crimes.
“I cannot guess where crime is happening unless we’re out on top of it or we get a phone call 911. It’s good when the community takes initiative to be a part of the solution instead of the problem,” said Coker.
To continue to strengthen ties with the city, the department looks to grow its mentorship and elderly programs.
“We’re actually going in and pulling up our sleeves with the citizens of Lake City and creating a better city,” said Coker.
Later this month, the chief will give another update on crime rates at a crime watch meeting hosted by Councilwomen Wilhelmina Scott March 19th.
Also next month, CAT team member Sergeant Brandon Braxton from the department will receive his second national award from the National Criminal Enforcement Association.
“My goal for this police department is to have an experienced staff that goes out and helps the community,” said Coker.
