WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBTW) – Several kids from the Pee Dee and Grand Strand areas are participating in the National Spelling Bee.
According to the event’s website, four kids from the Pee Dee and Grand Strand are participating in the spelling bee, including:
- Jacob Mijalli, 13, of Hamer
- Joshua Brown, 13, of Bennettsville
- David Hix, 14, of North Myrtle Beach
- Maria Stuckey, 11, of Bennettsville
Mijalli attends Latta Middle School and is speller number 372, the event’s website says.
Brown goes to the Marlboro School of Discovery and is speller number 393.
Hix goes to St. Andrew Catholic School and is speller number 410.
Stuckey attends Bennettsville Intermediate School and is speller number 444.
All four spellers made it through round 2.
In round 3, Brown misspelled the word “equitable” and Mijalli misspelled the word “obsolescence.”
Hix spelt his word, “osteoporosis,” correctly and Stuckey correctly spelled the word “patriotism.”

Mijalli, Brown, Hix, and Stuckey didn’t make the finals for the 2019 National Spelling Bee.
