The SC Department of Corrections is investigating how inmates took control of part of a dorm at Lee Correctional Institution Friday evening.
Dexter Lee, a spokesman for the department, told News13 inmates overpowered an officer around 6:50 p.m. He says the group was then able to take control of one side of a dorm.
SC Department of Corrections Emergency Teams and SLED responded.
Lee says the inmates held the officer for just under an hour and a half. Once safe, the officer was examined by medical personnel and released.
SCDC officials say approximately 92 inmates are assigned to the dorm involved in Friday night’s incident. It’s unclear how many inmates actually took part in the incident.
Lee says the dorm did not have any damage and confirmed Lee Correctional is secure. Lee added there is no threat to public safety.
