Congressman Tom Rice hosted an Educator Summit where South Carolina Ports Authority officials talked about the job opportunities students can have at the Inland Port Dillon.
According to Jay Beneventano, Talent Acquisition Manager for SC Ports Authority, individuals that are 18 years old could start off making $50,000.
“You don’t have to have years of experience. We provide the training in house. We just wants someone that has some hand-to-eye coordination, but that wants to be there. I think that’s the biggest thing,” Beneventano said.
Beneventano spoke to local tech school leaders and educators about how they can share the opportunities with their students. He said it’s a way to give students, who don’t want to attend college, a chance at a successful career.
“They used to tell me, ‘there’s no other industry that will pay you well, go to college.’ We have to change that, we have to show these students that there is more,” he said.
Port jobs revolve around heavy industry and manufacturing. Although students who have taken trade courses are encouraged to apply, any individual can receive training at the port. Port employees are also given the opportunity get their schooling paid for, if they wish to pursue a specialized skill.
Congressman Tom Rice said hosting an event with local educators gives them the chance to reach more students.
“What we’re trying to do is bring the educators here and let them learn themselves. Educate the educators about the Dillon Inland Port, and the opportunities that it is bringing, so that they can go back to their schools and tell their students,” Rice said.
