One Lake City homeowner got some much needed help on Thursday repairing her damaged home caused by Hurricane Matthew.

“Home Works of America” partnered with students from USC and First Baptist Church in Columbia to make the repairs for her.

The homeowner chose not to speak with WBTW News13, but told the volunteers she’s grateful for their help.

“Thirty houses in Lake City alone that have already been previewed that are ready for repairs,” said Lyle Miller, the area director for Home Works of America. “And, we have about another 50 applicants that are asking for help, so we want to try to get to as many of those as possible. Our goal is to get 75 done in the next two years.”

This project is called “Hammer We Hope” and the goal is to help ease affordable housing issues and help those who need it the most through what the organization calls “compassionate construction.”
