Good Samaritan struck and killed while assisting driver of broken down 18-wheeler

DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – A 47-year-old Society Hill man was hit and killed Tuesday morning while trying to help a stranded driver.

Lance Corporal Matt Southern says the crash happened at about 5:05 a.m. Tuesday on U.S 52 near the intersection of U.S 15 in Darlington County. Southern says the driver of a tractor-trailer pulled out of a private drive onto U.S. 52 when it broke down and blocked both lanes.

Troopers say Milton McGee stopped to help the truck driver and was hit and killed by the driver of a 1999 Dodge pickup, who was traveling southbound on U.S 52.

McGee was transported to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence where he was pronounced dead, according to Darlington County J Todd Hardee.

The driver of the pickup was wearing a seatbelt and was taken to McLeod Hospital in Cheraw.

This incident remains under investigation by the Darlington County Coroners Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
