Georgetown County Detention Center names “officer of the month” after clogged sewer pipe incident

Correctional Officer Veronica Gibbs was named as the Georgetown County Detention Center’s “officer of the month” for May on Monday after helping to unclog a sewer pipe.

Georgetown County Sheriff Lane Cribb awarded Gibbs a certificate and a challenge coin after recognizing Gibbs’ efforts to unclog a sewer pipe at the center earlier in May.

A press release from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office says Gibbs saved Georgetown County nearly $15,000 after an inmate clogged a sewer pipe with two shoes. Employees from a local plumbing company were able to remove one shoe from the sewer pipe, but Gibbs was able to pull the second shoe from the pipe by hand.

“Officer Gibbs has shown more than once how valuable she is to this agency,” Sheriff Cribb says. “Her recognition is past due.”

Gibbs came to the Georgetown County Detention Center in 2005 after retiring from the New York City Department of Corrections. She spent 20 years as an officer at Rikers Island Prison.
