Jimmy Stone, who previously served as Darlington’s fire chief, a Darlington County councilman and a candidate for Darlington Mayor, died Thursday.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee tells News13 that Stone’s health was declining.

Last month, the Darlington Fire Department posted on Facebook, asking everyone to say a prayer for Stone who went through a ‘tough surgery’.

In 2015, Stone was involved in a close battle for Darlington Mayor.

Local leaders are reacting to his death late Thursday, including former Darlington Mayor Tony Watkins:

“Jimmy Stone was a legend in Darlington and leaves behind a family and a community who will treasure his memory for decades to come. He also leaves behind one of the finest and best trained fire departments that will carry on his tradition by protecting our city.”

Count on News13 as we continue to honor the life of Jimmy Stone.
