A donation from Duke Energy will help get a new degree program started at Francis Marion University.
Duke Energy gave the school a $50,000 grant for the university’s new mechanical engineering course. The money will be used to buy equipment needed to start the program.
The monetary gift is part of Duke Energy’s “K to Career” grants program, which puts a focus on science, technology, engineering and math courses for students in all grades.
Dr. Fred Carter, the university’s president, says “mechanical engineering is very much a hands-on educational experience, so the quality of the equipment that they acquire is going to be paramount to the quality of engineers we produce.”
Duke Energy previously gave grants to FMU for an industrial engineering program that launched in 2014.
