FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence School District One high school students say they want their voices heard. Now a group of students formed the ‘students faculties committee.’
Eight students from each high school in the district are working together to give board members recommendations.
South Florence Sophomore, Dylan Gandy is one of the students that created the committee.
“The goal is to add a student’s voice or perspective to the facilities plans,” said Gandy. “Florence School District One listens to the parents, community leaders, business owners but I don’t think ever asked the students what we see in the classroom. What could they do to improve our learning?”
The group developed a needs list for South and West Florence High Schools.
South Florence list of needs:
- Bathroom upgrades
- Expanded arts program
West Florence list of needs:
- Classroom security
- Fewer 22 mobile units
- Outdoor bathroom upgrades
The group plans to develop a list for Wilson High School at its next meeting Thursday, Jan. 15th.
South Florence Committee advisor Michelle Cummings says it’s important to have student leaders involved at each school.
“These kids might not, will not see changes while they are in high school but [this is] what they want for future Florence students to have. The equality goal is to have all students represented,” said Cummings.
Next year the group hopes to tour other schools in the state to get more ideas.
“I’m extremely proud and I can’t wait to see how it grows,” said Cummings.
The group plans to present its findings to the new district facilities committee and the full school board at end of the year.
