LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – The Florence School District Three School Board met Thursday to discuss safety measures the district is taking inside schools.
The board has had stakeholders meetings where the community gave input on safety precautions they want to see taken.
Director of Human Resources, Angelia Barr Scott, presented the idea of clear book bags to the school board on Thursday.
“One of the things we are looking at in Florence School District Three are ways to enhance safety,” she said. “The clear book bags actually came as an idea during one of our safety meetings.”
Barr Scott said clear backpacks would not be an additional cost to the district.
“It will actually fall in line with our typical costs,” said Barr Scott. “We actually provide book bags now to our students who are in need.”
Barr Scott said parents could either buy their child a see-through backpack, or the district would hand them out during its back-to-school bash.
She said although there could be privacy concerns about the backpacks, there are many positive impacts the book bags could have on students and their learning environment.
“Some of the pros, of course, would actually be safety,” she told News13. “The other pro would be a focus on academics as well, so now students will be focused on bringing just items that are focused on academics.”
Barr Scott said she is hoping on a decision by the school board within the next month.
