FLORENCE, SC (WBTW)- Students in Florence School District 1 will only have to make up three days lost this year during inclement weather. Florence School District 1 announced their plan Thursday night for making up the six instructional days lost during Hurricane Florence.
According to Board Chairman Barry Townsend, the board of trustees plans to take advantage of their ability to forgive three missed days and plan to make up three other days using the makeup days already built into the district’s calendar.
Though they considered taking two days from their 18.5 day winter break, the board ultimately decided it was best to keep the current winter break schedule in place.
“The Board values the input of our community, and after taking into careful consideration the concerns expressed for the potential for this proposal to seriously disrupt the holiday plans of our students’ and staff’s families, has decided to vote against this recommendation and will keep the current winter break schedule in place,” Townsend said in the statement posted to the district’s Facebook page.
The district also stated that if they had any more closures this school year the options for making those up include using days from spring break, Saturday school, extending the school day, extending the year beyond graduation dates or even petitioning the state to waive the days missed.
