FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela released a statement following a deadly officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon.

“In the very early afternoon hours of July 14 of this year, a City of Florence Police Officer was dispatched to a “man with a gun” call in the area of the Hilton Garden Inn located on Hospitality Way. When the officer arrived at 12:28 P.M., the officer made contact with the suspect and directed the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect failed to drop his weapon and instead shot at the police officer. Upon being shot at the police officer discharged his weapon at the suspect. In the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and later died from his injuries.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was immediately contacted and has assumed the investigation into the incident.

Following Department regulations and procedures the Officer was placed on paid Administrative Leave.”
