EFFINGHAM, SC (WBTW) – Members of the Florence County Sheriff Office’s Special Response Team geared up on Wednesday for their weekly training.

The all-day training consisted of rapid response exercises including weapons training, building clearing, and vehicle takedowns. The team is a part of the SWAT team and was created about six months ago. The members are specialized in responding to hostage situations, barricaded suspects, and fugitive apprehensions.

Members of the SRT spent the day improving their shooting skills, perfecting their accuracy, and speeding up their response time. They say they always enter a scene armed with two weapons: an AR-15 as the primary weapon and a handgun for backup.

“We have to be able to equally have fire power against violence perpetrators within our community. And everyone that is assigned SWAT or SRT goes through a rigorous qualification to be able to have access and be able to use and deploy that AR-15 platform,” said Lieutenant Mark Fuleihan.

A 3-person swiper team was also training on Wednesday in a remote location.
