Florence city leaders announced plans for two new community centers at Doctor Iola Jones Park and Maple Park on Tuesday.

Each center will be about 4,000 square feet and will include a common room, study areas, restrooms, kitchen space, and offices. The city will spend about two million dollars from bonds to build the new centers.

Pat Gibson-Hye Moore, of the Florence City Council, says “the children had to walk back to the church to use the restroom or they went to Timrod Park instead of coming here. The community needs this building. It’s not a want any longer, it’s a need.”

Work on the new community centers is expected to begin this fall. Specific details about construction have not been released.
