Florence airport back to having four flights a day

The Florence Regional Airport is back to offering four flights a day after starting the year off with only three.

According to Connie Anderson, Florence Regional Airport Executive Director, the airport has seen a five percent passenger increase after American Airlines added embraer jets to the area.

The addition has brought the number of cancelled flights down, Anderson said. She also told News13 she expects to see more passengers using the airport within the next few months.

City Manager Drew Griffin said the economic growth in Florence could be playing a role in the increase.

“Businesses use commercial flights a lot. I would anticipate that just our good business growth and good business community is starting to see advantages and benefits associated with using our local airport,” Griffin said.

Currently, American Airlines is the only airline offered at the airport and Charlotte, North Carolina is the only location where flights go.

To further increase the rate of passengers, Griffin said the city hopes to one day offer flights to Atlanta as well.

“Unlike Myrtle Beach, we don’t have this very high tourism commercial flights, but we are very business oriented and large companies like Sonoco, GE, and Otis Elevator are dependent on good transportation networks out of our community.”
