First ‘Intern and Apprentice Signing Day’ held for students in Darlington County

DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – The first ‘Intern and Apprentice Signing Day’ was held for students in Darlington County on Tuesday.

Nearly two dozen students “signed” with more than a dozen local businesses to take part in ten-week, paid internships and apprenticeships.

The first-ever ‘Intern and Apprentice Signing Day’ in Darlington County Schools is part of the district’s “Key to Career” initiative, which gives students genuine work-based experience to help prepare them for life after high school.

“Workforce development is on the front of everybody’s mind in South Carolina. You talk with our state legislators, you talk with our local businesses, and so this is a way to merge our students in Darlington County with our businesses,” said Tim Newman, Superintendent of Darlington County Schools.

The event was held at Mayo High School, and students from the Darlington, Hartsville and Lamar attendance zones took part.
