A man charged in connection with his child’s death in Florence County appeared in court over the weekend.

Bennett Grayson, 36, was seen by a judge on Sunday, said Major Michael Nunn, with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. No bond was set as Grayson’s charges require bond to be set by a circuit court judge.

Grayson, of Converse Drive in the Florence area, was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of his 9-month-old infant, according to Nunn.

Maj. Nunn told News13 that Grayson left the child unattended for an unknown length of time after leaving the child with a bottle to feed itself “on or about November 24, 2018.” When Grayson returned, the child was not breathing.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken ordered an autopsy.

According to the Florence County Public Index, Grayson’s next court appearance will be on January 30.

News13 will provide updates as we receive them.
