47-year-old Milton McGee was hit and killed Tuesday morning while trying to help a stranded driver.

Family and friends tell News13 they’re not surprised he was helping someone in need because he was the type to be ready to help anytime.

“He was always there. He’s a family guy who loved everybody and will help everyone,” said friend Katrice Keith.

Troopers said McGee stopped to help the truck driver and was hit and killed by the driver of a 1999 Dodge pickup, who was traveling southbound on U.S 52.

McGee was transported to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence where he was pronounced dead, according to Darlington County J Todd Hardee.

A big bear and a gentle giant, that’s how people would describe McGee.

“You call him and he’s there. No questions asked,” said nephew Norton Byrd.

“He wasn’t my blood brother, but he was my brother. He would treat all of us like that. He was the big brother everyone needed at anytime,” said longtime friend Richard Cotton.

McGee was well-known in Society Hill, especially when it came to helping out the community. The family said he recently hosted a Mother’s Day cookout for everyone to enjoy and was already making plans for a Father’s Day cookout.

“He’s a very fantastic guy. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. He’s truly going to be missed by not only his family, but by lots of friends,” said Byrd.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Friday in Society Hill starting at 7:30 p.m.
