Dozens turn out for mac and cheese cookoff in Florence

A Mac and Cheese cook-off took place in Florence Saturday afternoon, and the organizer tells News13 she hopes to make it an annual tradition.

“You get two plates, and they’re numbered. So when you go to each vendor, you can put that flavor on the plate and then you can vote,” said organizer, Ashley Johnson.

People around the area tried 10 different flavors of mac and cheese, thanks to Ashley’s Yummy Tummy catering business.

“I travel throughout South Carolina and when I go to different towns, I observe and watch things. So I was like maybe I should do this. I remember Florence had a mac and cheese festival but they kinda stopped,” said Johnson

The unique comfort food recipes were up to the test, as mac and cheese lovers from the area got to vote on their favorite one.

“I’ve actually never been to a cookoff before. I’m pretty excited to taste them all and vote,” said attendee, Sona Hardison.

Johnson said the most popular mac and cheesse people usually go for is,  “The pimento cheese, I think it’s because we’re from the south. I got some sugestions on that, people have said to crumble some doritos on it. So I’m going to take that suggestion,” said Johnson.

People who attended wondered how long it took Ashley to cook all 10 flavors.

“It took me a couple of days but those days that it took me to make all these flavors for everyone, it doesn’t compare to their surprise and the excitement here. So I’m really excited,” said Johnson.
