DILLON, SC (WBTW) – The Dillon School District Four School Board voted to install crime tip boxes in all of the middle schools and high schools in the district at its meeting on Monday.
Superintendent, Ray Rogers, said the school district used to have crime blocks in its schools years ago.
“We’re looking at anything that will keep our kids safe during the day,” said Rogers. “Usually, the kids are the ones that let us know what’s going on. Adults are usually the last to know, but kids know.”
Rogers said it’s a way for students to get involved, and keep the schools safe.
“The kids, if they’ve got any suggestions or if they’ve got anything that’s bothering them, or something that they’ve seen or heard,” he said. “We would hope they would place it in the box to give us a heads up.”
The Superintendent said the crime tip boxes will be set up as a stand in both the two high schools, as well as, the two middle schools in the district.
Rogers said each box will cost the district $75.
“We’ll see if it’s a viable way to see if we can get information that may be pertinent to something that may go on that maybe we can diffuse before it starts,” the Superintendent said.
Rogers said bringing the boxes back into the schools is a way to keep Dillon students safe. He said the district already takes safety precautions, like security cameras, inside the schools.
Rogers said House Representatives Jackie Hayes, and Lucas Atkinson brought in an architect to recommend ways Dillon District Four can create a safer environment for students.
“There are different things to look at,” he said. “Maybe windows, maybe doors, but we do have a budget to work under. We just have to see what kind of suggestions he [the architect] has.”
Rogers said safety of students is always the district’s top priority.
“We’re always looking for better ways to keep our kids safe,” said Rogers. “You always think that it only happens somewhere else, but it can happen here, and it’s so sad. “We never want it to happen in our area.”
Superintendent Rogers said the crime block boxes will be installed in the schools by the end of May.
