LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – The sheriff’s office used a helicopter to track down a teenager who they say ran from home into the woods with a handgun after a family fight.
At about 11 a.m. on Thursday, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a teen who had run away from home and into the woods after a verbal and physical altercation with a parent. The teen had a firearm and was threatening suicide, the FCSO reports.
The department’s helicopter team responded and was able to spot the juvenile hiding in the woods within minutes of arrival. Once located, deputies on the ground were able to safely approach and take the juvenile into custody.
The teen denied any intent of self-harm and was charged with simple larceny, assault and battery (third degree) and minor in possession of a pistol. The teen was released into the custody of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
“Our ability to respond to incidents like this from the air and the ground means that we are able to resolve dangerous situations more quickly and safely for all concerned,” Sheriff Kenney Boone stated.
