With only a few days until the race at Darlington Raceway, law enforcements want to make sure everyone has a good time, but this year their top priority is safety.

Officials are taking it up a notch by using hand held metal detectors to screen people before they enter the track.

“We ask for our fans to be patient as best as they can, because we’re doing it for their own safety,” said President of Darlington Raceway, Kerry Tharp.

All vehicles will enter through Gate 39B and exit through 39A. As an extra security feature, officials will check every car that comes through the tunnel to get inside the track.

There will be over 100 officers inside. The highway patrol will also have more than 100 troopers and officers from different counties will be working the race.

“There will always be some of us out here no matter what time it is,” said Lt. Kilgo.

Darlington Raceway president says wider, more comfortable seats were installed. Along with improvements on the sidelines and a wall of honor for all 49 cup winners.

“We want to make sure that the fans that come here to Darlington have an experience that they will remember for a long time,” said Tharp.

Race weekend begins August 31 and the Southern 500 will be on September 2.
