DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The Darlington County Sheriff’s office held its annual ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ event.

Sheriff Tony Chavis and Captain Kaynerra Capers created the idea in 2017.

“It’s all about loving thy neighbor,” Sheriff Chavis told News13. “Doing for others because we don’t have to, but because we can.”

Law enforcement officers, Hartsville High School basketball players, and volunteers with Mended Hearts Ministries helped prepare the meals.

“If they were able to get out then obviously they would do so,” said Pastor Reginald McLeod. “But because they can’t, I believe we have the responsibility of taking, not only meals to them, but taking fellowship to them, and letting them know they’re not forgotten about.”

Chavis said it’s important to let home-bound seniors know they are cared for in the community.

“We’re going to make sure that those in need have something to eat,” Chavis said. “And then we’ll be able to go spend Thanksgiving Day with our families,” he continued. “It’s just a way we can make sure that we are able to provide a meal to our home-bound seniors.”

McLeod said he was happy when the sheriff’s office came to the ministry with the project.

“It means a lot because it’s doing for others,” said the Senior Pastor. “When we are blessed, we have a responsibility to be a blessing to those that we have a privilege of serving with in the community.”

Chavis said the sheriff’s office plans to host the event again in 2019.
