DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – A major with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office was fired hours after announcing his candidacy for Florence County Sheriff.
Darrin Yarborough told News13 deputies came to his house after he made the announcement and told him the sheriff needed his gear back. Deputies told him his services were no longer needed, Yarborough said.
Lt. Robert Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the termination. Kilgo said Yarborough’s services were no longer needed when asked about the firing.
Yarborough said he has no plans to talk to the sheriff about what happened. He added that he thought this was another example of a sheriff abusing their power.
Yarborough announced his campaign for the 2020 election on Thursday in Florence. He will run as a Democratic candidate.
Yarborough began his career in law enforcement in 1993 as a correctional officer at the Florence City-County Complex. He has also worked for the Florence Police Department, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florence County Detention Center.
News13 has obtained documents that show Yarborough was fired by Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone on October 10, 2018, a week after the deadly law enforcement ambush at Vintage Place. The reason given for separation was “Termination, Pleasure of the Sheriff has expired”.
News13 has reached out to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office to ask what led to Yarborough’s firing, but we have not heard back.
