SCRANTON, SC (WBTW) – A man died in a mobile home fire in Florence County late Monday night, according to Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.
The home that burned was on 1607 Pancho Lane, not far from Hwy. 378 about three miles northeast of Lake City. Keith von Lutcken, the Florence County coroner, identified the man who died as 74-year-old Douglas Ard. The cause of the fire has not been determined and an investigation is ongoing.
Two sheriff’s deputies in one patrol car were responding to a 911 call about the fire shortly before midnight when they crashed, Kirby said. The deputies were on Old Georgetown Road, and they were responding to try to save the man inside the home who was reportedly trapped. The deputies were closer than firefighters at the time of the first response, Kirby said.
The deputy driving ran off the edge of the road, apparently overcorrected and then the car flipped several times, Kirby said. The two deputies were checked out at a local hospital and released without serious injuries, Kirby said.
