HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Carolina’s Kids detailed what it takes to provide weekend food bags for students in the Darlington County School District.
In a Facebook post Thursday night, organizers with Carolina’s Kids posted two photos of packed meal bags loaded into vehicles. The post details what it takes to provide the 720 weekend food bags to students each week.
“It’s a week-long process to get the weekend food bags to the children. Our standing order is paid for, picked up and delivered to the Kids Closet every Monday evening, the Coker Softball team packs 300 food bags every Tuesday morning. Every Wednesday evening, a different community group comes to pack the remaining food bags. Thursday morning, the school social workers, school facilitators, parent volunteers, school employees and SROs pick up the food bags and deliver them to 12 schools in the district. And Friday afternoon, the food bags are sent home with the students,” the post reads.
Feeding America reports that 1 in 5 children struggles with hunger in South Carolina and 23% of families in Darlington County live below the poverty line.
