Buildings, roads close at Francis Marion University after propane gas released on campus

A truck crash caused propane gas to be released on the campus of Francis Marion University Monday, according to a press release from the university.

School officials say the truck was delivering materials to the FMU campus Monday afternoon when it ‘accidentally struck the cap on a propane tank near the Hyman Fine Arts Building’. That caused the release of propane gas.

The school said that Hyman and the adjacent Grille restaurant were evacuated out of an abundance of caution and Heyward Drive was closed between Alumni Drive and Wallace Woods Road.

Technicians came to campus and removed the gas and the situation was normalized by early evening, according to the press release.
