FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence City utility crews are working to repair a large water main break Friday afternoon at the intersection of W. Palmetto Street, Cashua Drive and Ebenezer Road.
According to a post to the city’s Facebook page, crews are currently working to isolate the leak so that necessary repairs can be made.
While city crews have not commented on what caused the leak, officials apologized for the inconvenience and said they hope to restore service as quickly as possible.
A boil water advisory was issued by the city and DHEC just before 5 p.m. on Friday. A press release from the City of Florence says water system customers in the 3400 block of W. Palmetto Street, 3300 block of Dogwood Chase lane, 3300 block of Ebenezer Chase Lane, 900-1100 blocks of Oak Chase Lane, 3300 block of Popular Chase Lane, 3300 block of Maple Chase Lane, and 1102 Ebenezer Road are advised to boil their tap water vigorously for one minute prior to using the water for drinking or cooking.
There has been no confirmed contamination of the system, according to the release. However, because of the loss of water pressure, a “slight potential” for bacteria contamination exists. DHEC requires the city to issue a boil water advisory when an event occurs that allows the possibility for bacteria to enter the water system.
“Water customers in this area should continue to vigorously boil their water for at least one full minute prior to drinking or cooking until otherwise notified by the City of Florence,” says the release. “Also, any ice made from water that has not been boiled should not be used for drinking purposes.”
Test results for bacteria quality should be completed by Saturday, at which time the city will notify customers of the status of the boil water advisory, according to the release.
