A new educational initiative is set to open in Lake City, thanks to the partnership of the Darla Moore foundation, Francis Marion university, and Florence-Darlington technical college.
The Continuum is set to provide a two and four year degree, and students who are interested can apply starting in May.
“I think it’s going to be a nice experience,” said executive director, Jeanette Altman.
The $25 million educational building, is right in the heart of downtown Lake City. The new regional center is focusing on education and workforce development.
“Our vision for the continuum is that there’s a synergy between the technical college and the university, even with high school,” said Altman.
The school will allow students to master technical skills and workforce development courses. It will provide high tech classrooms, business incubators, dual enrollment classes for high school students and much more.
“The continuum may be the place they want to take a course or two., maybe Monday, Wednesday and then Tuesday, Thursday they drive to the main campus. We’re all working together to make sure that we’re providing an educated and trained worker to local businesses and industries,” said Altman.
The goal is to provide students from Francis Marion university and Florence-Darlington technical college, easy access to more educational opportunities in the area.
“There will be no added cost. We’re housing the curriculm, the courses, and the institution,” said Altman.
The continuum is expected to complete construction in May and classes will begin in August.
