An 82-year-old Marion County woman struck during a car chase near Mullins Wednesday has died.
Marion County coroner Jerry Richardson says Donnie Floyd of Marion County died Wednesday afternoon in the emergency room in Marion from injuries sustained in the crash on Bill Gause Road in Mullins.
Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace says the brief chase began when a deputy came in contact with Mychal Legette, who was wanted for attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Legette didn’t comply with the deputy’s commands and drove away from the deputy, according to Sheriff Wallace. During the chase, Legette’s vehicle collided with another car on Bill Gause Road before he ditched the car and was arrested after a foot chase.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences on their Facebook page Thursday morning. According to the post, Floyd was a retired food service worker for the Marion County School District, a great grandmother, and was well known in the community for baking cakes.
The sheriff’s office also noted that bond has been denied for Mychal Legette. According to the public index, Legette is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, felony driving under the influence death results and failure to stop for a blue light death results.
Floyd’s body has been transported to MUSC in Charleston for an autopsy. South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
