Withlacoochee Park in Marion County was packed Saturday, with people sharing their stories of survival for the 30th Annual Relay for Life.

“We’re here fundraising. We are selling luminaries. We’ve got baked goods, drinks, sodas and hotdogs. All kinds of good stuff out here today, said Marion County Relay for Life Coordinator Debbie Erwin.”

Cancer survivors shared their stories of beating the fight..

Lillie Reid, one of the survivors who attended the event has been cancer free 26-years. After her husband encouraged her to see a doctor, she found out she had stage 2 Hodgkin’s.

“It was a 2 year process and finally I was in remission. I’m thankful to God and to the doctors for the care that I received, said Reid “

Other cancer survivors say the disease is something that impacted their entire family.

“I’m a twin. I’ve had it. My twin sister had cancer. Two of my nieces had it and my daddy had it. He was a 25 year survivor, said Blenda Hardy”

The goal of the event is to inspire others diagnosed to keep pushing, but also to work towards finding a cure.

“Every week almost, someone that I know comes in the office and is diagnosed with sometype of cancer and I hope, maybe not in my lifetime but the near future. They will find a cure for cancer. It’s on the rampage for many young people, said Hattie Foreman.”

All funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society in helping find a cure.
