FLORENCE, SC – The Pee Dee Area Council of Boy Scouts honored Colonel Rocky Gannon as its 2016 Distinguished Citizen. The dinner and ceremony took place Thursday night at SIMT at Florence-Darlington Technical College. The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes a person in the community that has demonstrated integrity and a continued commitment to enhance the lives of others both in their personal and professional lives.
Gannon, who is 91 years old, is a U.S. Air Force veteran. He spent 37 years in the service during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He’s also an Eagle Scout. Gannon earned “Eagle” status with the Boy Scouts.
His community involvement is massive, along with numerous honors that he’s received over the years. Just to name a few, he was named the SC Aviator of the year, 2001, a member of the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame, and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Darlington Chamber of Commerce. He was also a committee member for both committees for creation of the Florence Veteran’s Park and Darlington’s Veteran’s Memorial.
Rocky and his wife, Roberta, have three children, Mike, Patti and Mary. Rocky is proud of his son, Mike, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, as did his four grandsons.
