LELAND, N.C. (AP) – The parents of three students enrolled at a Wilmington charter school and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a federal lawsuit claiming the school’s uniform dress code unfairly discriminates against girls.
The Wilmington Star-News reports the ACLU filed the lawsuit Monday claiming that the uniform policy at Charter Day School in Leland causes girls to “suffer a burden that boys do not suffer.” The school requires that girls wear skirts, “skorts” or jumper dresses, while boys are permitted to wear pants or shorts.
Two of the parents involved in the lawsuit, Bonnie Peltier and Erika Booth, say the skirts mean girls are colder in the winter than boys and that they can’t run and jump as freely during recess.
