MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – A new Myrtle Beach ordinance allows wildlife control workers to use guns to shoot coyotes trapped in the resort city.
Local media outlets report city council gave initial approval to the ordinance Tuesday.
Under the rule, wildlife specialists could kill the coyotes with a .22 caliber bullet. That’s the method recommended by the Department of Natural Resources as the most humane method of execution.
The ordinance came before council after a wildlife trapper said he was forced to club the animals to death because of the city’s gunfire ban.
There have been numerous sightings of coyotes in the city in recent months, including last month when one of the creatures made its way into the Myrtle Beach International Airport before it was trapped and removed.
