MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Dr. Thomas Weshefsky joined News13 Now at 9 a.m. on Friday to discuss the increasing rate of myopia (also known as nearsightedness) in children. The trend involves American children and many others around the world.
Weshefsky said research has found the increased use of screens on televisions, computers, smart phones and tablets is contributing to the vision problems in children. According to Weshefsky, some solutions for nearsightedness include prescribed dual-focus contact lenses, specialty eye drops designed to slow down the worsening of vision, and orthokeratology. Commonly called “ortho-K,” orthokeratology uses special lenses worn at night. The lenses then allow the wearer to take them out during the day and have good vision, while the lenses also stop or slow down the progression of nearsightedness, Weshefsky said.
CNN also recently posted more details about the increase in child nearsightedness and some of the solutions. CNN’s information can be found online at CNN Health.
