NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – An Ohio man has died after collapsing in the water near North Beach Plantation Resort Tuesday afternoon.
Rescue workers were called to an area near the resort after a man in his late 70s collapsed from a medical emergency while wading in the ocean, confirms North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Patrick Dowling.
North Myrtle Beach officials say Robert Enlow, 78, of Ohio, was in town visiting.
According to witnesses, Enlow was seen floating face down in the water about 50 yards offshore. Family members and witnesses pulled Enlow from the ocean, placed him on the beach, and started CPR.
His wife told first responders that Enlow had a heart condition, including a pacemaker and high blood pressure.
North Myrtle Beach Patrol and medics transported Enlow to the 45th Ave South beach access where a medic unit waited to transport him to the hospital. Upon arrival at the beach access, Enlow was shocked with an AED and chest compressions were continued, officials report in a press release.
Enlow was then moved into the medic unit and transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for further treatment, where officials say he later died. According to the press release from North Myrtle Beach officials, Enlow’s death is reported as a drowning.
