Officials release cause of fire that destroyed 10 condo units in Horry County

Fire crews from several departments in Horry County took an hour to get control of a fire that ended up destroying 10 units at a condo structure in the Burgess area Friday night.

The call went out at 7:45 pm Friday for the blaze at a 2-story condo building in the area off Bay Road, which is off SC 707 just north of Holmestown Road.

Units arrived to “heavy flames” at a structure in the Island Green condos on White Tree Lane, Brian Van Aernem of Horry County Fire Rescue told News13.

On Monday, fire officials told News13 that the fire was caused by “improperly disposed smoking material,” but they did not elaborate if the smoking material was a cigarette, cigar or something else.

Around 8:45 pm, fire crews got the fire under control, said Van Aernem, who added that no one was injured in the fire.

After initial units responded to the blaze, a second alarm was sounded for more crews to fight the fire. At one point, there were at least a dozen fire engines and ambulances at the scene.

Crews that responded to the fire were from Myrtle Beach Fire, Horry County Fire Rescue and Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue.
