MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – An independent prosecutor says three Myrtle Beach-area law enforcement officers won’t face criminal charges in the wounding of a man in his apartment in April (Click here for previous coverage)
Prosecutor Kevin Brackett of York and Union counties said Friday that the officers were justified in their use of force and were acting in self-defense, according to The Sun News. He was asked to examine the case by the local prosecutor.
Brackett said the man who was shot, 30-year-old Julian Betton, was armed with a handgun and pointed it at officers when they came to his home April 16 as part of a marijuana investigation.
Betton survived the shooting and was subsequently charged with several drug counts. His lawyer, Jonny McCoy, says he has questions about the police account of the shooting.
