MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Local officers spent the day hanging out with kids and community members for the “Connecting Cops, Kids and Community” event.
Dozens of people came out to the Market Common on Saturday along with officers from several departments, including Myrtle Beach Police, Horry County Sheriff’s Office, and Myrtle Beach Fire. This is the second “Connecting Cops” event this year. Corporal Nicole Shelton with Myrtle Beach Police is one of the organizers of the event. She hopes it will help build trust between officers and the communities they serve, especially children.
“We’re more than just a uniform, a badge and a gun. We’re their friends. There’s been so many times where I’ve walked through a parking lot and waved to a little boy or girl and they’re shy and they’re afraid. It needs to be the total opposite.”
